Setup

Get started in under a minute

Orbit 1.1 ships with guided onboarding: it walks you through each permission with live status, connects your ChatGPT account, and starts talking with on-device voice — no API key, no terminal, no config files.

1.Follow the guided permissions

Orbit needs three permissions to work. The onboarding requests them one at a time, shows live status for each, and explains exactly what the permission is used for before you grant it.

Screen Recording

Captures your active display when you activate Orbit. No background recording — ever.

Accessibility

Powers the global shortcut and allows Orbit to type or interact on your behalf during tasks.

Microphone

Enables voice input. Orbit only listens when you press the shortcut or enter voice mode.

Dismissed a prompt? Enable it manually in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

2.Connect your ChatGPT account

Orbit uses your existing ChatGPT subscription to power the AI. Under the hood, it launches a bundled Codex runtime and checks for your auth.

  • Already logged into ChatGPT? Orbit detects it and skips straight to voice setup.
  • First time? Orbit opens a quick ChatGPT login flow and brings you back once connected.

3.Pick a voice path

Voice is local-first in 1.1. Orbit starts talking with no key and no account — bringing your own OpenAI key is strictly optional. Switch anytime from the panel.

Local Voice

Default

On-device speech recognition and text-to-speech. Runs entirely on your Mac — no audio leaves your device, no account, no API key. Works the moment onboarding finishes.

Bring your own key

Optional

OpenAI transcription for input, GPT TTS for more natural speech. Paste your own OpenAI API key once — Orbit stores it in the macOS Keychain and never writes it to disk in plain text.

4.Take the tour

Orbit finishes setup with a short intro: the wake shortcut, how screen context works, and how the cursor can fly to what matters on screen. Takes about 30 seconds, then Orbit disappears into your menu bar until you need it.

5.What Orbit can do once connected

Once connected, Orbit becomes a full desktop agent:

  • Control your Mac — click buttons, type text, open apps, navigate menus
  • Browse the web — research, fill forms, complete multi-step tasks
  • Create documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and PDFs
  • See your screen and explain any software interface in real time
  • Point directly to buttons, controls, and UI elements

Everything runs in one continuous session with automatic context management, so follow-up requests build on what came before. And if you ever want out, press Esc — it stops Orbit instantly, from anywhere.
